Pumpkin Carving Workshop at P.A.T.H.S. Brings Students Together

Last fall, Archer, a 10th grade student in Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS), led a day-long pumpkin carving workshop for culinary and commercial art students, giving tips on best practices for pumpkin art. The school displayed approximately 60 of these carved pumpkins in the PATHS lobby to the delight of visitors and the school community.

Besides “spreading positivity” and helping form stronger relationships between departments at the school, students were proud of their work and enjoyed getting to know new peers, reported Elizabeth Long, the adult advisor on this project. “We could not have had such a strong event without the quality tools purchased with the grant funds that we received.”

Next year, the school hopes to repeat the experience and to donate its carved pumpkins to the annual Camp Sunshine Halloween Festival in Casco, Maine that supports young people facing life-threatening illnesses and their families. “It is important to give back to the community,” Ms. Long said.
