KING MIDDLE SCHOOL “CULTURE HOUSES” SHOWCASE DIVERSE STUDENT BACKGROUNDS

The eighth grade class at King Middle School has developed a creative and unique way to demonstrate their culturally diverse student body. Through constructing and designing birdhouses to be hung around their school grounds, students will get to highlight aspects of their personal community that they wish to be on display.

Not only will students have a chance to see their own backgrounds and stories on display, they will be given an opportunity to learn hands-on building and construction skills. The process requires both an understanding of specific design qualities for individual native species as well as proper use of wood shop tools. These skills will be built upon throughout the duration of the project. The “culture houses” provide an opportunity for the King Middle School community to display their cultural heritage in a meaningful way.
